Postcards from Everyday Materials

I created this class series in April of 2020 in partnership with Dakota County Libraries. Everything was in lockdown and we weren’t able to do in-person classes at the library, so we brainstormed what kind of classes that we could do with everyday materials that you would have around your house. We decided that a series of classes all about making postcards (or postcard sized art) that you could send to family and friends was a great theme for a series. We released one class a week, which is why you’ll see the same introduction to the series in each lesson.

For these projects you just need to raid your recycling! Each one uses paper that you can find from all kinds of different sources: magazines, safety paper envelopes, sticky notes, wrapping paper, junk mail. You’ll also need a glue stick or double sided tape, some craft paint or ink pads or food coloring. Each project has a supply list at the beginning of the video.

There are five different techniques you can try:

• tie dye tissue paper
• paper quilts
• sticky note resists
• magazine paper mosaics
• safety paper collage.

These projects are great for many ages and skill levels. They are meant to be fun and whimsical projects you can do in just a few minutes and then mail to a friend to say hello. You can jump in and do the lessons in any order, so pick the one that sounds fun and start crafting!
