Crazy Fly Trap Embroidery Sampler
Inspired by Victorian Era crazy quilt blocks but with a modern twist and a carnivorous plant! This richly embroidered block features a stylized venus flytrap in the center of a patchwork style square. The panel is a pre-printed design on Spoonflower’s Celosia Velvet, which has a plush texture and a subtle shimmer.
Stitches in this project will include: fern stitch, berry stitch, fly stitch, Spanish knotted feather stitch, french knots, feather stitch, sorbello stitch, sailor stitch, threaded coral stitch, triple chain, detached chain, bullion knots, blanket stitch, Indian edging stitch, couching and wheat ear stitch. Some of the stitches include beads.
There’s a materials list with everything you’ll need for this project below. In the lessons, you’ll find a picture-in-picture view so you can see both the instructor and a close up view of the studio table so you can see every stitch step-by-step.

What you’ll need to provide for this project
You will need to purchase a Crazy Fly Trap pre-printed fabric panel for this class. It is available in my Spoonflower shop. The design fits on one fat quarter of fabric and includes 2 panels (to help reduce wasted fabric). I recommend the Celosia Velvet. You can also choose Organic Cotton Sateen or Linen Cotton Canvas.
At least 4 colors of embroidery thread. Choose either size 8 perle cotton or 6-stranded embroidery thread. I recommend one color (lime green) for the flytrap and three solid or variegated colors (red, purple, teal) for the rest of the embroidery.
Embroidery or chenille needle
Scissors
6 inch embroidery hoop or fusible fleece fabric
size 8 seed beads in a metallic finish

I love beginners.
You do not need embroidery experience for this class. Beginners are welcome! If you’ve done a little embroidery before, great!
The fabric panel has a few guidelines marked to help with your stitching so you can make precise stitches by just following the guidelines. I’ll give you some suggestions for which colors to use for your stitches to create an even color variation across the piece, but you can try any variation you want to.
Every lesson has a comment block so you can ask questions. I will do my best to respond to your questions as soon as I see them so you can keep stitching.

This class works on your schedule.
In this on-demand version you work at your own pace, completing the lessons on your schedule whenever you want to stitch. There’s a comments section in every lesson to ask questions if you need help.
